A short history of Trsat Castle
Trsat Castle stands where a Roman fortress once guarded the pass above the Rječina gorge. The present castle was built in the first half of the 13th century by the Frankopans, the Princes of Krk, to protect their lands in Vinodol. Wars and the 1750 earthquake left it in decay, until in 1826 it passed to the Austrian field marshal Laval Nugent, who restored it in a romantic neo-Gothic style and made it his residence. The Nugent family mausoleum, with the family coat of arms, still stands in the courtyard, and the family kept the castle almost until the end of the Second World War.
Visiting Trsat Castle
Today the courtyard has a café-restaurant, and in summer the walls fill with visitors who come for the view: the Rječina gorge straight below, the port of Rijeka and the Kvarner Bay out to the islands. The castle sits on the Trsat plateau, 138 m above the sea, on the same hilltop as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat. From the city centre you can walk up the Petar Kružić stairs, which climb from the banks of the Rječina to the plateau, or take a city bus up to Trsat.

Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast, and its terraces turn into a dance floor no club can match: stone walls, open sky and an Adriatic sunset as the backdrop to the DJ booth. The venue is a 15-minute walk from Rijeka's city centre (or a short bus ride up to Trsat), so getting there and back is easy without a car.

The most recent edition, Sunset Castle 2026, took place on July 3rd, 2026. The headliner was Rosbeh with a live set, supported by local selectors — Super Saiyan, Doctor No, Steve Lokki and Hedoné.
